Case Study: Intelligent CCTV Installation at a Secure UK Defence Facility

Delivering intelligent perimeter security for a strategic defence site

Advance Fire & Security was appointed to design, install and commission a high-specification CCTV system at a secure UK defence facility.

Due to the sensitive nature of the site, its location and the identity of the client remain confidential.

The initial project focused on protecting newly constructed office accommodation and secure storage facilities. Delivering the work required a highly professional and carefully managed approach, with strict access procedures, operational restrictions and security protocols in place throughout.

From the outset, our team worked closely with the client to plan each stage of the installation, maintain clear communication and minimise disruption within the live operational environment.

The project was completed successfully, with excellent feedback received for both the quality of the installation and the professionalism of our engineers.

Expanding the perimeter security strategy

Following the successful completion of the initial CCTV installation, Advance Fire & Security was invited to support a further phase of security improvements.

The client wanted to strengthen protection around sections of the site’s external security fencing. The original concept involved traditional external detection beams, but our technical team identified an opportunity to deliver a more capable and resilient solution.

External beam systems can be affected by environmental conditions, wildlife, vegetation movement and ongoing maintenance requirements. After completing further site surveys and design consultations, we proposed an intelligent CCTV-based perimeter detection system using advanced AI video analytics.

This approach would provide both intrusion detection and immediate visual confirmation, giving security personnel a clearer understanding of any activity around the perimeter.

Designing an AI-enabled CCTV solution

Working closely with the client, we redesigned the perimeter security strategy to provide improved detection and complete visual coverage.

The project included:

  • Installation of additional high-definition perimeter cameras
  • Advanced AI video analytics for intrusion detection
  • Full visual coverage of the identified perimeter areas
  • Immediate visual verification of security alerts
  • Removal of the need for conventional external detection beams
  • A scalable system architecture capable of future expansion

Although the increased number of cameras made the installation more logistically demanding, the revised design offered significant operational advantages.

The client recognised that the intelligent CCTV system would provide more reliable detection, reduce false alarms and improve the quality of recorded evidence while lowering long-term maintenance requirements.

Following a detailed review of the proposed design, the enhanced solution was fully approved. The completed installation provides a high-performance IP CCTV platform designed for reliable monitoring, intelligent detection and future expansion.

Working within a live military environment

Delivering security installations within an operational defence facility presents a number of unique challenges.

These included:

  • Strict security clearance and site access procedures
  • Restricted working windows
  • Coordination around ongoing site operations
  • Tight programme deadlines
  • The need to protect operational security at every stage
  • Careful management of equipment, personnel and installation activity

Our project management and engineering teams maintained regular communication with all relevant stakeholders throughout the works.

This ensured that each stage was completed safely, efficiently and in line with the agreed programme without compromising the security or operation of the facility.

Improving detection and operational awareness

The completed solution provides the client with a modern and intelligent approach to perimeter protection.

AI-enabled video analytics allow the CCTV system to identify potential intrusion activity more accurately than conventional beam detection alone. When an alert is generated, operators can immediately review the associated camera footage and assess the situation.

This provides several important benefits:

  • Greater detection reliability
  • Fewer nuisance and false alarms
  • Immediate visual verification
  • Improved situational awareness
  • Stronger forensic evidence
  • Reduced long-term maintenance
  • Greater confidence for security personnel

The solution also creates a flexible foundation for future security improvements across the facility.

Strengthening a trusted security partnership

The successful delivery of the original office and storage facility CCTV installation gave the client confidence in Advance Fire & Security’s technical capability, communication and approach to working in a highly secure environment.

That confidence led directly to the award of the perimeter protection project.

As the latest phase reaches completion, the intelligent CCTV solution has met the client’s expectations and further strengthened the relationship established during the original installation.

This project demonstrates Advance Fire & Security’s ability to design and deliver technically robust security systems for defence sites and critical infrastructure, combining intelligent technology with careful planning, discretion and reliable project management.
